For the first part of this year I've been contacting schools in Portugal, with the intent of visiting them and doing the exact same research I've done in Cape Verde and in Boston last year.
The goal of this project is to see as many different environments as possible - and of course that means different cultural backgrounds and all of that - but it also means discovering the differences in fairly similar universes. And given the fact that I just came to Europe again, that gives me the possibility to explore schools close by without completely breaking my budget!
After the conference I watched a few weeks ago, I have been looking for other types of meetings and discussion groups where I can meet more teachers or educations enthusiasts with whom I can share some ideas and exchange infos.
This week I will watch another conference about reading and writing in the early stages of education and by the end of the month I will be presenting my very own conference, where I will speak about this project of mine and - hopefully! - inspire parents and other teachers to make a change in their own environment. (Go ahead and wish me luck with that!)
One of the things I love the most when developing a project such as this one is to talk about it and share it. The other thing I love even more is to find people and institutions that already have the same principles in mind.
And Ms Nancy Atwell is exaclty one of those people. I first heard about Ms Atwell through an online forum, where someone shared this video.

After seeing it I did a bunch of research on her and her school and each video I find is even more inspiring than the previous one!
I hope one day I will be able to meet her in person, but in the mean time I will settle for reading her book Systems for Transforming Your Classroom and School.
* sigh* Inspirations, inspirations!
